As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, The Catholic University of America invites the community to reflect on the military traditions and leadership that shaped the American Revolution and the nation that emerged from it.

Renowned military historian John W. Hall will offer a lecture on the military history of the American Revolution, examining the relative importance of frontier traditions and European influences on American military practice. His talk will offer a fresh assessment of George Washington's generalship, considering his leadership of the Continental Army within the broader military traditions of the eighteenth-century Atlantic world.

This event is made possible through a memorial fund established to honor William (Bill) M. Hammond (1943-2022), a Catholic University alumnus and longtime historian at the United States Army Center of Military History. The William Hammond Memorial Fund supports the study of military history in the Department of History and Anthropology at The Catholic University of America. Through this fund, his legacy will continue to introduce students to the study of military history and to the people, decisions, and traditions that have shaped the American experience.
